The maps of Spain are now accessible through the standard WMS service (28/07/2008)

Geograma has published the maps of their geographical services through the Web Map Service (WMS). This service, which follows the rule marked by the Open GeoSpatial Consortium (OGC), allows any compatible application to access the maps from around Spain.

The access to the service requires a prior registration, whereby the user will receive a URL that when used in any compatible application will give it access to the most updated and greater coverage maps available today. The current coverage is 100% of the municipalities of Spain to street level, and the data are updated continuously.

Registration can be done in http://www.geoservicios.com/freewms and access is free, but Geograma reserves the right to unilaterally suspend this service. The paid service, unlike the free service, provides a security service gathered in a SLA (Service Level Agreement).

Many CAD and GIS applications allow access to such services, giving users access to the information available in servers. From now on a technical engineer can produce a project map located anywhere in Spain, directly from his CAD tool and without having to dispose of cartography, or a user can overlap a GIS study over a background map that allows to locate an inventory.

The University of Leon and Geograma sign a cooperation agreement on the publication of cartographic information (07/03/2008)

The agreement, signed in the Campus of Ponferrada of the University of León, will allow to the students the freee access to the technological platform. The agreement will promove the development of applications with geographical functionality, in several languages, enviroments and devices, through an infraestructure created to develop applications with geographical functionality. Likewise, the students will be trained in the problematic of the publication of cartography on the internet, and the corporative geographic information systems.

With this agreement, the university wants to introduce and facilitate to its students the development of geographic applications on the internet in order to give an answer to a growing market and facilitate their labour insertion and technological update.

Geograma´s service allows a swift development and a real introduction to the development of geographic functionality applications, both on the internet or on local environments, on any device and in any programming language.

The application of the geographical technology is not only interesting for disciplines inextricably linked with the territory, as agricultural engineering, forestry or topography. Tourism, education or health sciences are an example of studies where the maps are more and more present, making the managing easier, and creating new job opportunities.

The service, similar to the well known maps of Google, Microsoft or Yahoo, ensures to the students that develop projects based on this technology a thorough knowledge of the latest trends in geographic information systems, Internet and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), with an accuracy that the big companies of the Internet do not provide.

Graciaspepe.com will use geographic techniques to provide its new service. (15/09/06).

The Globalia group's new initiative offers a service in which optimum resource localisation becomes a decisive factor in providing a quality service to its client base.

The website www.geoservicios.com is the chosen solution for providing geographic services that will allow localising customers more effectively, optimise the collection routes and definitely add the geographic component to the firm's corporate applications.

“Thank you Pepe“ (www.graciaspepe.com) is a service in which a chauffeur will drive your own car, including substitution at the wheel in the event that you have consumed alcoholic beverages, drive it to and from the garage, wait whilst you spend a night partying or an afternoon shopping, or even transport fleets of company cars. This last service, “Pepe for Fleets”, will be available from October onwards.

Thanks to XML-based SOA architecture, the integration of the services provided by geoservicios.com has been easy; and this has meant a very fast deployment in the market. Access to the geographic servers has also provided digital cartography, georeferencing and routing to the companies of the same corporate group that are involved in this innovative project, such as PepeCar and PepeTravel, in turn allowing them to acquire the added value that a spatial perspective can provide in solving the daily problems of Location-Based Services (LBS).

“Return with Pepe” and “Pepe by the hour” are two of the services currently on offer by this initiative, within Globalia’s business of low-cost services.

The municipality of Astigarraga consolidates its geographic information system (25/06/06).

The Guipuzcoa municipality of Astigarraga has incorporated a geographic information system that can access overlaid municipal data on a map and an aerial photograph, allowing easier resource management.

Astigarraga is a municipality that borders with San Sebastian, the capital of the province of Guipuzcoa in Spain. It has a total surface area of 11.46 square Km and a population of approximately 5,000 inhabitants. Astigarraga was reborn from the ashes of an annexation. From being a marginal corner on the outskirts of San Sebastian, it has now become a thriving community that combines modernity – with extensive industrial zones – with its traditions, since Astigarraga is also the apple and cider capital of the region.

Indeed, in order to satisfy the municipality’s main tourist demand the geographic information system, in the previous phase, published a web page with specific information about the cider centres ("sidrerias") during the cider season of 2005. The page locates the cider centres within the municipality, allows access to their contact information and displays the best route to them. This is a singularly important aspect of the application since the cider centres are usually located out of town in the countryside and getting there can be rather complicated.

Other very useful options have been added to the application’s initial functionality, such as: a virtual street map in the style of Google maps; a search engine for buildings, points of interest (POV), neighbourhoods, industrial sectors and rural inns. This has had the effect of transforming the geographic information system into a very useful tool for any spatial analysis of the municipality and for its citizens. Additionally, due to the importance of the industrial sector in the municipality, a business guide was published that searches, locates and contacts companies and businesses in Astigarraga.

The geographic information system is based on the GeographicServices.net technological platform. GeographicServices.net is a map hosting service that allows outsourcing an organisation’s geographic information management. The service uses open standards which allow developers to include the command functions and the Astigarraga municipal data in their applications. For example, an engineering firm could download the aerial photograph and integrate it in their project with their usual CAD program, whilst always using the most precise and up-to-date spatial information available, which obviously increases the quality of the work produced. This is an especially novel aspect since the potential users of the municipal website are not limited only to the people that access through a navigator, but now can also include other applications or servers, providing added value to the website. The information system’s total budget did not exceed 6,000€, which makes it affordable to institutions or companies of any size. The success of the system has been proven with over 100,000 annual access hits to the geographic servers.

In addition to the open access available to the general public through the Internet, the geographic information system is also used internally by the municipality’s technicians. A fire-fighting cabinet management and control system has been recently incorporated. Astigarraga has pre-positioned a number of fire-fighting cabinets throughout the municipality in order to deal with hypothetical fires in rural communities. The cabinets contain diverse fire-fighting equipment and material. The location and access to these cabinets must be clear and easy during a fire situation. Additionally, it is essential that the equipment and material that are stored in the cabinets be always ready for immediate use at any given moment; therefore the Department of Works and Services carries out frequent maintenance tasks to ensure their readiness.

To complement this installation, an information system has been implemented that allows fast and intuitive queries regarding the location of the cabinets, the fire-fighting equipment and material stored in them, and information that is relevant to their maintenance. These queries may be carried out from any authorised workplace within the city council.

The municipality of Irun will use the GeoServicios platform to publish its city street maps on the Internet (15/01/2005).

The municipality of Irun has selected the GeoServicios platform to publish the city's street maps in its official website. Irun, a Basque municipality with a population of 60,000 inhabitants, has developed an official website that has become an example for its services to and close contact with the citizens. Amongst these services, the authorities required a solution that would allow the quick and efficient publication of the municipality's maps and associated information. After evaluating AutoDesk and ESRI software products, the municipality granted Geograma the contract to provide the technological platform GeoServicios to publish the maps.
